Samaná is emerging as the choice where exclusivity, nature, and a lower-density setting matter more than convenience. Is Samaná Actually Getting New Luxury Hotels?
This part is confirmed, not speculative. Marriott International is developing paired Ritz-Carlton and St. Regis properties at Playa Jackson, near Sánchez — presented publicly at FITUR 2025 and designed by ALIA Made in Architecture. Four Seasons has a property planned near Los Haitises National Park. Hilton's Curio Collection opened the Almare Beach Resort in Las Terrenas as part of the Blu Terrenas development, in active construction as of April 2026, and Marriott's Autograph Collection opened Donoma Las Terrenas that same month, described by the brand as a "scout" property ahead of further regional expansion. The Dominican Ministry of Tourism (MITUR) has stated this is a deliberate strategy to position Samaná as a distinct high-end tier within the country's broader tourism offering.
For planners booking 12 to 24 months out, this timing matters: these openings create a window to secure early availability before Samaná reaches the demand levels Punta Cana already sees.
How Do You Actually Get to Samana?
The most reliable route today runs through Las Américas International Airport (SDQ) in Santo Domingo, followed by a private or shared road transfer on the Autopista Juan Pablo II, a modern toll highway completed in 2008 that cut the Santo Domingo-Samaná travel time from roughly 4.5 hours down to 1.5-2.5 hours. This highway fundamentally changed the region's accessibility. Before it existed, the peninsula felt genuinely isolated. Today it functions as a realistic extension of Santo Domingo, both for leisure travelers and for incentive groups. From an operational standpoint, we currently recommend planning arrivals through Santo Domingo whenever schedule reliability is the priority.
Can You Fly Directly Into Samana From the United States?
Not on a standard scheduled basis, as of mid-2026. Samaná El Catey International Airport (AZS) receives scheduled international service from Canada (Air Canada, Air Transat, WestJet) and seasonal service from Europe (Air Caraibes, from Paris). US service currently runs mainly through seasonal or charter arrangements rather than daily scheduled flights. This is worth stating plainly rather than glossing over: the dependable path today is SDQ plus the highway transfer, and it already works well for groups planning around it.
Is Samaná Ready for Corporate Incentive Groups?
For groups prioritizing exclusivity over scale, increasingly yes, though the ground infrastructure supporting meetings and events is still less mature than Punta Cana's. Planners should currently allow more lead time for logistics coordination than they would in an established MICE hub. As the Ritz-Carlton and St. Regis properties at Playa Jackson come online, that gap is expected to close considerably.
What Experiences Make Samaná Different From Punta Cana?
The clearest example is whale watching. Every winter between January and March, more than 1,500 North Atlantic humpback whales migrate to Samaná Bay to breed and calve. The bay was designated a Marine Mammal Sanctuary in 1986, and together with the offshore Silver Bank and Navidad Bank, forms a protected marine area of roughly 25,000 square kilometers — one of the most established whale sanctuaries in the hemisphere. Los Haitises National Park and the El Limón waterfall round out the region's signature natural experiences, none of which have an equivalent in Punta Cana's resort corridor.
Why Is Foreign Investment Increasing in the Region?
Real estate specialists tracking the peninsula describe a steady rise in foreign buyer activity, driven by:
- Limited buildable coastline
- Luxury hotel pipeline, and infrastructure
- The brand new highway
- Their international airport
- The hospitality brands now building around it.
That sequencing, infrastructure first and brands second, is consistent with how other emerging luxury markets in the region have developed in their early stages.
